All Alone Together was an exhibition at the Gibberd Gallery in 2013, a sculptural installation of three structures reminiscent of military bunkers. Embodying restrictive ideas about identity and security, these enclosed, defensive spaces provided a tool for social and psychological experiment, an opportunity to examine the meaning of selfhood and togetherness. The process of construction, which turned the pristine space into a noisy construction site for several weeks, was integral to the work. The gallery remained open to visitors, with volunteers and community groups doing the building, developing the idea of the gallery as a place of meeting and action. On completion, the installation then played host to performances, talks and workshops. The publication takes the form of a concertina-folded strip, reflecting the extended, temporal nature of the project, with three ways of approaching the work interwoven in a mosaic across its full width – a snapshot diary of activity, a photographic exploration of the objects, and a critical appreciation.
